Candidate Survey Responses – On The Issues – Each Question, All Candidates

19. What are your specific thoughts on the City’s Public Works yard? How would you work to improve the current Public Works yard? Do you support relocating the yard?
Mayor Joseph Donaldson
I support relocating the Public Works yard out the community park and residential area. We should be ashamed of ourselves for expecting our city employees to work under these less than adequate conditions. The current Public Works yard after soil mitigation could be turned into additional community park area and become part of the Community Land Trust initiative for affordable workforce housing. The site is a prime spot for both park and housing.

Sara Presler-Hoefle
The City has other locations and property to relocate the yard.  Assuming the yard is a healthy place to build and has no outstanding environmental issues, the City should utilize this property for affordable housing or to generate revenue.  If it is unhealthy, we should clean it up.

Karla Brewster
I would support moving the yard to someplace less intrusive to the neighborhood.  As men and machines sometimes have to get out early with snow plows and other loud equipment, somewhere where residents aren’t so close would be better.  The yard needs to have covered shelter for the equipment to increase the longevity of the equipment.

Coral Evans
In 2002 I was a member of the City’s Bond Taskforce.  During that process I was one of the few members in support of a new Public Works yard.  Public Works is a basic government (public) service and the fact is, is that we need to improve this service; we need to relocate the yard and make the overall system more safe, efficient and effective.

Morgan Hagaman
I know that the current Public Works yard is in need of some repair.  I am not exactly sure what can be done to improve the current yard.  I do know that the current yard is located on some of Flagstaff’s most valuable real estate and that the City should really look into relocating the Public Works yard and get Public Works everything that they need, and make better use of the land that the yard is on now.

John McCulloch
I do support relocating the yard out of a residential neighborhood.  We could use the existing yard for an affordable housing partnership.  I haven’t researched the issue enough to provide an alternative location, but something closer to the landfill seems reasonable.

Micole Shorty
The public works yard is bursting at the seams and it has a difficult time servicing the community.  There needs to be an expansion of the current yard or relocating it at a bigger spot so they can do a more efficient job in accommodating the needs of the public.

Al White
It needs quite a bit of work- relocating it and providing a safe and energy efficient place to work is a high priority because public works is an essential public service role of government by anyone’s standards.  Dedicating a % of budget each year or of fees from enterprise activities is going to take a long time to finance.  Bonding was low on the public’s radar before.  This could be one of those needs that the public needs to know more about to support- we all heard about potholes and snow removal this year- didn’t we?
