Marley Discovery Center Opens at Lowell Observatory: A Boost for Flagstaff’s Economy

Flagstaff celebrated a monumental addition to its cultural and scientific landscape with the grand opening of the Marley Discovery Center at Lowell Observatory. This state-of-the-art facility promises not only to enhance the city’s reputation as a hub for astronomical discovery but also to deliver significant financial benefits to the local economy.

The grand opening event, held under a clear Arizona sky, brought together community leaders, science enthusiasts, and visitors from across the region. Among the speakers was Julie Pastrick, President and CEO of the Greater Flagstaff Chamber of Commerce, who emphasized the center's role in stimulating economic growth.

Named in honor of the Marley Foundation, whose generous support helped bring the vision to life, the center boasts immersive exhibits, interactive displays, and engaging programming designed to inspire visitors of all ages. Its focal point, the Universe Theater, is expected to become a must-see attraction, drawing thousands of tourists annually.

The Marley Discovery Center aligns with Flagstaff’s identity as the world’s first International Dark Sky City. It complements existing attractions, like the historic Clark Telescope and the Giovale Open Deck Observatory, further solidifying Lowell Observatory as a top-tier destination. The observatory already attracts over 100,000 visitors each year, and the addition of the Marley Discovery Center is projected to increase attendance by at least 20%.

This surge in tourism will ripple through Flagstaff’s economy, benefiting hotels, restaurants, retail stores, and service providers. According to the Greater Flagstaff Chamber of Commerce, the expansion could inject millions of dollars into the local economy annually and create new jobs in the hospitality and tourism sectors.

Lowell Observatory Executive Director Dr. Jeff Hall shared the broader vision behind the project: “The Marley Discovery Center is more than a building. It’s a beacon of curiosity and exploration. By investing in education and public engagement, we’re also investing in Flagstaff’s economic vitality.”

As the doors to the Marley Discovery Center officially open, the excitement is palpable. This landmark facility not only celebrates Flagstaff’s rich scientific heritage but also ensures a bright and prosperous future for the city.
