INSPIRE Methodology of Prompt Engineering

INSPIRE: This acronym represents a methodology designed to aid you, the AI prompt author, in crafting powerful prompts that are both effective and innovative, incorporating the nuances of LLMs and Generative AIs and their specific domains. INSPIRE serves as a versatile guide based in research for crafting prompts that leverage the full spectrum of capabilities offered by AI technologies. It emphasizes clarity, context, expertise, iterative refinement, and strategic engagement, all of which are critical for generating impactful and relevant responses from advanced Generative AI models like ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Copilot, Perplexity, and others. The acronym, INSPIRE, helps users navigate the complexities of prompt design and prompt engineering by focusing on the powerful key elements that drive effective communication and creative problem-solving with Generative AIs.

I - Intention and Identify
Define the intention of your use case and AI prompt clearly. Start with a clear understanding of what you aim to achieve with the AI prompt, creating a framework and purpose for the AI/LLM to understand your use case.

N – Narrative, Examples, and Context

Provide narrative, examples, and context to help shape and drive your AI/LLM to achieve its objectives and goals. Create and supply detailed background information, context, story, and examples of successful outputs (few-shot prompting) to help the AI/LLM understand your desired use and outcomes.

S – Specific Objectives
Articulate specific objectives and goals for the AI/LLM. Effective AI prompts will outline the qualities, goals, and objectives of your desired output.

P – Personas of Experts
Embed powerful and descriptive personas/experts. Your AI prompt will incorporate specific expert personas or specialist roles for the AI/LLM to adopt while responding to your use case thus increasing effectiveness and impact.

I - Iterate and Optimize
Iterate and optimize based on feedback. The AI prompt will create a system that allows the AI/LLM to iterate, test, refine, and optimize the AI prompt with each run.

R - Restrictions and Controls
Set clear restrictions for your AI/LLM. The AI prompt will establish boundaries, limitations, and expectations as well as enable your AI/LLM to review for bias, generalizations, and false information for and within the generated content.

E - Engagement, Efficacy, and Effectiveness
Develop in the AI prompt an engagement strategy and a strategy of efficacy for the AI/LLM. The AI/LLM will thus make the output and interface between AI/LLM and user engaging and effective as well as the intended audience, through the strategy for engagement and addressing user experience.
